Patron Deities 101 - Amaterasu

Glad to see you could join us in class today! Here at Magick Users University, we strive to promote education as well as fun in our classes! Today, we'll be bringing you a new patron deity!

Today's honorable goddess is...!

*~ + AMATERASU + ~ *
天照

She'll outshine you, always.

+ About Amaterasu
Amaterasu is a Japanese goddess who represents (or is) the sun for the Shinto religion in Japan. She is one of their principal deities, to the point where people worship her solely. That group is widely known as “the Cult of the Sun”. Shinto is the indigenous spirituality of Japan and the Japanese people, which carries and connects the traditions of ancient Japan and modern day Japan.

Her full name is Amaterasu-omikami, (天照大神-天照大御神) which means “the great August kami who shines in Heaven”. Kami means “spirit”, though the word “god” is also used synonymously (so one could assume it would mean a “higher” spirit than of say a mortal).

She is known to be a beautiful and radiant goddess, born from the left eye of the god Izanagi as he purified himself, whom then went on to become the ruler of the Higher Celestial Plain. She was so bright ad radiant that he sent her up a long ladder to the Celestial Plain, where she has ruled ever since. However, the world was shielded in a period of darkness when he brother, the god of storms, created a stirring on earth so noisy it frightened the beautiful Amaterasu, and she hid in a cave and covered it with a rock. It blotted out her rays, covering everything in shadow.

However, the trickster god's dancing beckoned her out of her cave. A mirror had been hung in front of it, and, curious to see the beautiful light she saw (which was merely her own brilliant reflection) closer, she came out, bringing light to the world once more.

+ So what makes Amaterasu patron goddess material?

She is an important part of Shinto religion, thus making her a very prominent goddess and deity. Being the goddess of the sun, you can be sure that Amaterasu will bring beauty, light, and clarity to your life and magick, along with also things like warmth, radiance, and growth.

Patron Deities 101 - Sedna

Glad to see you could join us in class today! Here at Magick Users University, we strive to promote education as well as fun in our classes! Today, we'll be bringing you a new patron deity!

Today's first and honorable goddess is...!

*~ + SEDNA + ~ *
Alternatively, Nerivik, Siarnaq

Appearances are deceiving... she is actually a very compassionate goddess.

+ About Sedna
Sedna is a Native American Goddess from the Inuit territory...meaning cold. She rules over the arctic ocean and the Inuit Underworld. She is depicted as a rather viciously bloated woman with missing fingers and one eye... a rather fearsome image. But she wasn't always this way.

Once, Sedna was a beautiful maiden whom suitors traveled far for. However, she took a vow during her life to never marry, in order to care for her aging father. This deterred all potential suitors (whom were probably very disappointed).

One day, a mysterious, handsome man kayaked up to her abode. The mysterious man was charming, exotic, alluring... and most of all, rich. The man showered Sedna in every way possible so she would change her mind about never marrying. He provided luxurious furs, the good stuff. After so much care, Sedna finally fell to his allure and sailed off with him, leaving her father in lavish splendor.

Despite this, her father wanted her back, so he kayaked to Sedna and her mysterious husband's private home. Turns out she was miserable there—the legend says that he “wasn't the man she loved”. He may have been treating her badly, despite his wealth. Because of this, her father took her back towards home.

While they canoed home, Sedna's husband, whom was really a ghastly spirit, found out. He took off after them, and Sedna tried to hide in her father's boat, but it wasn't enough. The spirit conjured up a terrifying storm with churning water. Sedna's father, fearful the spirit would take his life, tossed his beautiful daughter overboard in the storm. Sedna tried to grasp for the edge, but her father chopped off all of her fingers, sending her sinking into the depths of the ocean. Her fingers turned into the first sea life, and her body remained under the sea. Well, you know why she's bloated now.

Upon returning to life, she has since ruled the sea and the underworld, called the Adlivun. If you want her god blessings while hunting or traveling in the ocean, pray to her and offer to comb her hair if she never needs it.

+ So what makes Sedna patron goddess material?

Sedna isn't an evil goddess. She does her job. She rules over water (mainly its dark components, emphasizing on its strength and might), ice, and the underworld. Because the Adkivn froze the would that came there and purified them for entrance into their afterlife (think of it as Limbo), she also has healing and purification properties.

Also, she would be great for spells involving compassion, love, family, and beauty. She is known for her lovely black hair, which she loves to have combed. It must get tangled a lot, living in the bottom of the arctic ocean!

Patron Deities 101 - Loki

Welcome to another Patron Deities 101 class, where Magick User's University brings the gods to you! We hope you enjoy today's lesson on a Norse deity. Knowing is half the battle. ♥

Today's honorable patron deity is...!

*~ + Loki + ~ *
Alternatively, Loptr

His happiness is your potential bad day.

+ About Loki

Who doesn't know about Loki? He is one of the most infamous gods of Norse mythology, and many tales, books, movies, you name it, have had him in it.

Loki has the bad reputation as a trickster god, whom would cause trouble and mayhem for those in Norse mythology. He's known for letting loose strings of insults and has a silver tongue. His sharp wit can be attributed to his association with the element of air. But did you know that other tales say he was the exact opposite? Many tales say he wasn't a trickster, but actually a rather fine guy who assisted the gods when needed. So which is real?

Perhaps that's up for you to decide.

He's been on many an adventure with Thor, the god of thunder and weilder of the great hammer that protects the land of the gods, Asgard. Loki is also the father of three other gods: the Great Wolf Fenrir, the World Sepent, and Hel, Goddess and keeper of the Underworld. Quite a family there.

If anything, one can take away from this that Loki is unpredictable. Whether a trickster or a helper... who really knows what this guy is thinking?

+ So what makes Loki patron god material?

For those of you who like tricks and treats, Loki is your guy. As he was also known as a shapeshifter, his unpredictability and ability to adapt makes him compatible for a lot of spell work that a witch may find themselves doing. He's quirky, fun, and mischievous. A great patron, and companion, if you don't mind the occasional joke being pulled on you (where did my keys go?).

+ Holy Statistics, Soull!

Nationality: Norse
Type: Trickster god
Physical Appearance: Fiery red hair and green eyes. Usually depicted as a slight figure.

Patron Deities 101 - Poseidon

Welcome to another Patron Deities 101 class, where Magick User's University brings the gods to you! We hope you enjoy today's lesson on a Greek/Roman deity. Knowing is half the battle. ♥

Today's honorable patron deity is...!

*~ + POSEIDON + ~ *
To the Romans, he was Neptune.

This guy was a love-machine.

+ About Poseidon
Poseidon was the brother of the other infamous gods, Zeus and Hades. To make a long story short, they basically drew straws and Zeus claimed the Overworld, Hades was stuck with the Underworld, and Poseidon was left with the sea. Poseidon was perfectly fine with that. He merely sat back and watched his brothers tear each other to bits over those little earth chunks.

Poseidon not only ruled the sea, but totally dominated it. The waves, foam, and all the animals that inhabited it were at his beck and call. Also, he was kind of an awesome lover, apparently. He had many, many, many lovers (both female and male), and sired a whole bunch of children, many of them gods, heroes, and other mythological creatures. I suppose when you're a god, you don't need to care about gay rights. He was feared by sailors and people of the sea—and respected.

When the Romans moved in, he kept his mighty vigilance and even his station but under a new name: Neptune. You can find Poseidon easily as a topic in a lot of art and literature. Look for a strong, intimidating figure with a long curling beard riding a lot of waves. The tail of mermaid or the tentacles of an octopus are also common.

+ So what makes Poseidon patron god material?
Poseidon is a well-known god, so his name will instantly invoke the listener with the feeling of the sea. His element is water, a very powerful one, which can instill gentle ripples or destructive waves. Poseidon is strong, and can represent not only water, but power and fertility. A great god to invoke for spells in which great force is needed... and even for the most delicate charms regarding love. He is also great for spells regarding the weather, and safe sea travel. A great god to consider!

+ Holy Statistics, Soull!

Name: Poseidon
Alternative Names: Neptune (Roman)
Nationality: Greek/Roman
Type: Water god
Physical Appearance: built like a rock, flowing beard, and perhaps the lower-half of a fish or octopus
Colors: Blue, seafoam green, silver
Day of the Week: Tuesday
Attributes: Water, power, fertility, weather, travel (sea)

Patron Deities 101 - Ra

Welcome to yet another class at Magick User's University! I'd like to start a segment called “Patron Deities 101”. This will be a great way for those to learn about the different patron deities one can have to represent the god and goddess.

Of course, there is no rule stating you have to have one. For me, I like having a patron god in that represents the things I stand for, or want to influence in my life.

A patron god or goddess can come from any source. It doesn't even have to be the same one! For example, my girlfriend's patron god is from Chinese mythology, and her patron goddess is from Egyptian mythology. The god and goddess represent two sides of the same coin.

So, lets start with our God/dess of the Month, shall we?

For our very first class, I wanted it to be big. And since I have a love of Egyptian mythology, naturally, I chose...

*~ + RA + ~ *
Alternatively, Re.

Don't mess with this mofo.

+ About Ra

Most people know Ra, if only by one thing: he is the Egyptian god of the sun. Not only is he that, he is the top god, the head honcho, the big cheese (or the flaming pie in the sky), of the Egyptian gods. He created himself through sheer willpower, and the other gods below him came from his amazing ability to procreate on his own.

The most famous of his children are Osiris, god of the underworld, Isis, the mother goddess, Seth, god of chaos and storms, and then Nephthys, Seth's twin sister and the nursing mother.

As a creator god, he was the most widely worshiped.

It was said that he traveled on two solar boats—one in the morning, and then one in the evening, accompanied by other gods on his journey as he turned dawn into dusk. As the journey went on, he was said to age, and then, when the sun rose again, be reborn.

Humans were said to be made from Ra's tears and sweat, and he created all lifeforms. Because of this, the Egyptians sometimes referred to themselves as “the Cattle of Ra”. And the sun in the sky? Why, that is certainly Ra's great eye, beaming down on you, watching all who were under it.

+ So what makes Ra patron god material?

Ra can stand for a lot of things, but most notably creation, and life. He is a good patron god to watch over you in times of need. The Egyptians saw him as wise and omnipresent. Ra would be a wonderful god for those who wished to be protected, and to utilize his raw power while doing magick, or even for tasks in their every day life.
